Growth is exciting. Scaling is different.
For many boutique fitness brands, the leap from a strong regional presence to a multi-market expansion can be the most challenging transition in their entire lifecycle. The systems that support one market rarely translate seamlessly into another.
That was the moment RTR Pilates found itself approaching.
After nearly two decades of building a premium reformer Pilates brand and a loyal community across the DMV region, RTR knew the opportunity for growth was significant. Demand for reformer Pilates was surging, and their product had proven itself time and again.
But expanding into a new market required more than ambition. It required clarity, systems, and a strategy designed to scale.
That’s where SABRE Business Consulting (SBC) entered the picture.
The Challenge: Turning a Successful Brand Into a Scalable Platform
RTR Pilates had already built something exceptional: a strong brand, a devoted community, and a premium studio experience.
What they needed next was a framework for expansion.
Opening new locations in new markets requires solving a complex series of questions:
- Where should the brand expand first?
- Which markets truly align with the customer profile?
- What leadership structure is required to support multi-market operations?
- How do you ensure the customer experience remains consistent outside your home base?
- What financial assumptions must hold true for new units to perform?
Without those answers, expansion becomes guesswork.
RTR’s leadership made a deliberate decision to approach growth differently.
They partnered with SABRE Business Consulting to transform their next chapter from a hopeful expansion into a disciplined strategy.
Building the Infrastructure for Growth
Before real estate was even discussed, SABRE began with a full strategic audit of the business.
Together with RTR leadership, the SBC team examined the brand from every angle: operational systems, leadership structure, market data, unit economics, and long-term expansion goals.
SBC also helped refine the most important element of any growth strategy: the customer.
Through data analysis and market research, SABRE helped RTR identify its prime avatar with remarkable precision. Understanding exactly who the brand serves—and where those customers live—became the foundation for selecting the right expansion market.
That clarity ultimately pointed to Philadelphia.
The Strategy: A Data-Driven Market Entry
Philadelphia was not chosen by chance.
Through SABRE’s analysis of RTR’s existing client base and regional demographics, the Philadelphia market emerged as a natural extension of the brand’s community.
The region offered the ideal combination of factors:
A sophisticated, wellness-oriented population.
Strong household demographics.
Growing demand for premium boutique fitness.
And a customer profile closely aligned with RTR’s existing members.
With the market validated, SABRE then led the real estate search.
Within six months, the team evaluated more than ten potential locations across the region before identifying the ideal opportunity at Narberth Square, located at 650 Montgomery Ave., Narberth, PA.
The site offered exactly what RTR needed for its first out-of-market studio: accessibility, dedicated parking, and a lifestyle-focused retail environment aligned with the brand’s premium positioning.
Just as importantly, the space allowed RTR to design the studio to its exact specifications.
The 2,766-square-foot studio, featuring 16 reformers, will showcase RTR’s signature open layout and elevated minimalist aesthetic when it opens in August 2026.
The Outcome: A Blueprint for National Expansion
RTR’s Philadelphia studio represents far more than a single new location.
It represents the successful transition from a regional brand to a scalable platform.
By strengthening operational systems, refining the brand’s customer strategy, and executing a disciplined market selection process, SABRE helped RTR achieve something many brands struggle to accomplish on their own: expansion with confidence.
Philadelphia now serves as RTR’s proving ground for national growth.
The brand plans to open:
- Three additional locations by the end of 2026
- Eight locations in 2027
- Ten locations in 2028
Each of those future markets will build on the framework established through SABRE’s advisory process.
Why Strategic Advisory Matters
Many companies believe growth is simply about opening more locations.
In reality, successful expansion is about building the infrastructure that makes growth repeatable.
That means validating markets before signing leases.
Designing leadership structures that scale.
Ensuring the customer experience can be delivered consistently across locations.
And making expansion decisions based on data rather than intuition.
RTR Pilates understood that distinction.
By investing in strategic preparation before pursuing expansion, the brand positioned itself to grow smarter, faster, and stronger.
And Philadelphia is only the beginning.
